The decimal (base-10) numeral system uses the digits 0–9 to represent values. It is the most widely used numbering system in everyday life and is the standard system for counting and arithmetic in many countries.

Decimal Numbers

Decimal is a positional numeral system with a base (or radix) of 10. The value of each digit depends on its position relative to the decimal point. Each position to the left of the decimal point represents a value 10 times greater than the position immediately to its right, while each position to the right represents a value 10 times smaller than the position immediately to its left.

For example, the number 102 represents one hundred and two. The digit 1 is in the hundreds place, the digit 0 is in the tens place, and the digit 2 is in the ones place. Whole numbers do not need to display the decimal point.

The number 102.5 represents one hundred and two and five-tenths. The digit 5 is in the tenths place, indicating a fractional value of 5/10. Additional digits to the right of the decimal point represent hundredths, thousandths, and smaller fractional values.

Decimal Numeral System Origin

One of the most widely accepted explanations for the origin of the decimal (base-10) system is surprisingly simple: humans have ten fingers.

Finger Counting: early humans used their fingers to count. This practice led to a natural grouping of numbers in tens (decimal or base 10).

Long before written numbers existed, people likely counted objects by matching each item to one of their fingers. This method of counting, known as finger-counting (or dactylonomy), made it easy to keep track of small quantities.

Once all ten fingers had been used, it was natural to start a new group of ten. Over time, counting and grouping numbers in sets of ten may have become a common convention, eventually leading to the development of base-10 number systems.

Although this explanation is intuitive, historians and archaeologists cannot prove with certainty that finger-counting is the reason the decimal system developed. Much of the evidence is indirect rather than conclusive.

Even so, many ancient civilizations (including those in Egypt, Mesopotamia, China, and Mesoamerica) developed base-10 number systems. Some of these cultures had little or no contact with one another, suggesting that counting on ten fingers may have independently inspired similar ways of representing numbers.

The connection between fingers and numbers can even be seen in language. The English word digit refers to both a numerical symbol and a finger or toe. It comes from the Latin word digitus, which means “finger” or “toe.”

There are many other body-based counting systems aside from base-10. These variations reinforce the idea that number bases throughout history tended to map onto countable body parts, and base-10 simply became the most common because ten fingers are the most immediately accessible counting tool everyone has on hand (literally).
